The swimming pool pump is one of the most significant energy consumers in a pool owner’s home — and probably the second-largest contributor to energy costs. To help pool owners lower their energy bills and protect the environment by reducing their carbon footprint, the U.S. Department of Energy’s new Dedicated Purpose Pool Pump regulations have gone into effect in July 2021. What does this mean for pool owners? Perhaps you need to upgrade your swimming pool pump to a variable-speed pump.
Why Are Pool Pumps Now Required To Be Variable Speed?
Because pool pump regulations are changing, only more energy-efficient variable speed pumps can meet the new energy efficiency standards implemented by the U.S. Department of Energy. Variable speed pumps feature more than one flow setting, allowing pool owners to save 40 to 80 percent on energy costs while maintaining the pool clean. Therefore, switching from a single-speed pump to a variable-speed pump offers the highest potential for pool owners to save on operating costs. There are currently 10.7 million swimming pools in the United States, 10.4 million of which are residential, according to the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance. As such, private swimming pool owners stand to gain considerable savings from the new Dedicated Purpose Pool Pump regulations.
In addition to annual usage savings, some utility companies in many U.S. states offer incentives for replacing non-compliant pool pumps, such as significant rebates for pool owners who purchase energy-efficient pool pumps. Some pool pump rebates in California can even be as high as $1,000. Even if you don’t reside in California, updating your pool pump to a more efficient model is a great way to bring your pool system in line with new federal regulations.
How Do the DPPP Regulations Affect Pool Equipment Manufacturers?
Following the enactment of this new national law, pool owners across the United States have started switching over to variable-speed pumps. Pool equipment manufacturers are gearing up to design and manufacture energy-efficient products in response, enabling pool owners to operate their pools effectively.
By far, multi-speed pumps are emerging as the fastest-growing segment of the pool products market. Many major brands are working to create more intelligent and energy-efficient pool pumps that meet the new energy efficiency standards. On multi-speed pool pumps, the best option is an inverter pool pump. Not only much quieter than a single-speed pump, but an inverter pool pump also allows for automatic and intelligent adjustment of flow rates, making it a cost-effective solution for keeping pool water circulating efficiently.
